All too often we see things like this, mainly using hand held devices though, positioning saves the day ...
Considerations prior to and during an overtake.
Catching vehicle ahead, no oncoming traffic or hazards, overtake in one fluid motion.
Extend our position whilst overtaking has many benefits.
Linking the bends & an overtake up Frocester Hill.
Extending our view to confirm whether overtake is on or do we have to abort.
If you cannot see ALL of the road surface, abort.
Another opportunity will present itself, if you seek it out.
Where do you place your bike, the N/S wheel tracks or the O/S wheels tracks?
From the seated position on the bike, when looking along the n/side of the LGV, the road surface could be seen, into the far distance. The BMW was the only oncoming vehicle, when that had passed, I extended my view by moving to the offside, confirming no other vehicles were in sight, no junctions etc, indicator on and commenced the overtake. As there was a RH bend in the distance, I regained the n/side road position and continued until I was in the correct position for the RH bend.
Reducing speed, equalising the hazards, contingency plan if things change.
This a NSL section of the A4136, heading towards Brierley, from Nailbridge, looking for a possible o/take when the central solid lines change, ensuring we can see the whole of the road surface ahead, before indicating and overtaking the vehicle.

Safety is our primary consideration, when positioning our machines, with reducing visibility, our speed must drop as well, but we use all our senses
to gain information, to put into our riding plan.
